Today marks the ten year anniversary of the Black Saturday brushfires in Victoria that saw 174 lives lost, hundred of people injured and countless families left homeless with nothing but the shirts on their backs.
While I was not affected personally by the fires, I can still recall where I was and what I was doing when the initial news coverage of what became the worst bushfire in Australia’s history broke. Over the following few days I scoured every website, news bulletin and radio coverage I could to learn more. Ten years later, I’ve read countless books, watched all of the ABC’s documentaries and even studied the impact of the firestorm while at University.
Today in honour of the ten year anniversary, I thought I would share a list of all of the books dealing with the Black Saturday firestorms that I am aware of as a way to pay homage to those who lost their lives and the brave survivors who have shared their stories since. By no means is this a complete list of every book out there, but it’s a starting point for anyone looking to learn more about the fires and what happened on the 7th February 2009.
Books have been listed by the year of publication.
Do you know of any other books published about the firestorm? Leave a comment below with the book and when it was published and I will add it to the list.
