Here is a dog, a Dalmatian called Dot,
Is she quite ordinary? NO, SHE’S NOT!

After their breakfast and a swim in the sea, Dot and her owner Rose jump on the bus to the hospital. Dot loves visiting the children of Wallaby Ward and they’re always pleased to see her too; from a crying baby to a bored teenager – a pat, a stroke and a cuddle with Dot cheers everyone up. But the work of the hospital dog doesn’t stop there and when one of her patients is in trouble, it’s up to Dot to save the day!

A fantastic rhyming story from the creators of the bestselling picture book, The Detective Dog – winner of the Books Are My Bag Readers’ Award.

Best selling children’s author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Sara Ogilvie have delivered yet another amazing picture book. The Hospital Dog is a sweet rhyming tale about a day (or two) in the life of a working therapy dog. Dot the Dalmatian is a therapy dog, that is a dog that is trained to give support, comfort, and compassion to those that need it. For Dot, that is the children residing in Wallaby Ward in the local hospital. Through the course of this book, we see Dot relax with her her owner Rose, before seeking out the children in the ward who need her company most.

Julia Donaldson is perhaps a renowned children’s authors, whose books have delighted readers all around the world. As one might expect, The Hospital Dog is expertly told through gentle rhyme, with a story designed to both inspire and captivate its readers of all ages.

Sara Ogilvie’s illustrations feature double page images  full of colour and endless activity. Through her drawings, you experience the highs and lows of hospital life; the crowded rooms, the endless noise and overwhelming boredom, anxiety and unease is expertly transferred instantly to the reader through every tiny detail presented on the page. There is so much going on in some of her pictures, that every time you read the book you will find something new to discover.

With children from all walks of life (ages, ethnicity and disability) represented in both the text and illustrations, The Hospital Dog is a beautiful and heartwarming picture book that comes full circle in the most unexpected of ways. It’s a feel good book that will leave you smiling. I really enjoyed this one.
